Nine-day Novena with St. Anthony of the Desert Day Three

“Then Jesus was led up by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil.  And he fasted forty days and forty nights, and afterward he was hungry.

 And the tempter came and said to him, “If you are the Son of God, command these stones to become loaves of bread.”

 But he answered, “It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone,

but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God.”

Matthew 4:1-4

“How you are fallen from heaven,

    O Day Star, son of Dawn!

How you are cut down to the ground,

    you who laid the nations low!

You said in your heart,

    ‘I will ascend to heaven;

above the stars of God

    I will set my throne on high;

I will sit on the mount of assembly

    in the far north;

 I will ascend above the heights of the clouds,

    I will make myself like the Most High.’

 But you are brought down to Sheol,

    to the depths of the Pit.”

Isaiah 14:12-15

Today’s Meditation

The devil, a fallen angel wanted to be like God, was cast out of heaven for his rebellion. The earth is his kingdom. His goal is to bring many souls to hell with him. Jesus, was tempted by the serpent, rebuke him and spoke the truth. Christ, who is the eternal truth has overcome the lies and deceit of the tempter. Let us hold on to the Living Word of Christ to fight back against evil and be at peace.

Prayer

Lord Jesus Christ, you were tempted and overcame the temptations of the devil. Have mercy on my weak soul and grant me the Holy courage to renounce the devil and his empty promises and all his works. I humbly ask through the intercession of the Immaculate Conception, may crush the head of the serpent and be with me at the hour of my death.
