How much Should you love God?
A passage from the Gospel of the Evangelist Mark Ch 12:28-31 “And one of the scribes came up and heard them disputing with one another, and seeing that he answered them well, asked him, “Which commandment is the first of all?” Jesus answered, “The first is, ‘Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one; and you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind, and with all your strength.’ The second is this, ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ There is no other commandment greater than these.” Jesus speaks the same words that God taught to Moses. Jesus is calling not just Israel, but the whole world to attention. Just as a parent is calling to their children to come to the room, Jesus is calling everyone to the Throne of God. “The Lord our God”, The God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, the Eternal God should be the focus of your whole being. One must be attentive, focused and have no other thoughts in their mind. There is nothing on the earth that is worth more than giving of yourself to God. When one truly focuses on God, you forget that you are on the earth, you see yourself before the presence of Him who is Holy, he who has not been seen face to face but existed before all time. Prostrate yourself and give Thanks to him who is the giver of gifts.
Jesus then speaks, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart” Money, gold, your car, your silly face book account, whatever the world has put in front of you means absolutely nothing before God. The love that we give to God is an imperfect love, because of our fallen nature, we can’t love God back perfectly as Jesus can. But we can strive to improve our Love towards God. Listen to the beat of your heart. That pounding was made by him who put it all together. His Mighty Hands fashioned it. Can you see that when God made you, he took his time to fashion you? He carefully chose what he wanted to give you. Not all human beings are made the same, even those born as twins have different personalities that make them unique. He gave you the life that will lead to your sanctification. God doesn’t make mistakes. Every action and reaction are considered. The greatest gift is that he gave you free will to choose to worship him.
St. Augustine of Hippo points out in his book Teaching Christianity, That God left nothing vacant. Meaning that your whole heart, your whole soul and your whole mind are meant to be filled with the Love of God. There is nothing on earth that can fill that void. You can drink yourself to unconsciousness, you can be a ten- time Lottery winner, you could be a ruler for the rest of your life, but nothing will ever satisfy you but God. You soul was carefully shaped by God to go into the body he made for you. The breath of the Holy Spirit is what gave you the first breath and heartbeat in your mother’s’ womb. Just as the Blessed Virgin Mary said Yes in her reply to the Archangel Gabriel, she was filled with Life and with the Love of God, we too can experience such a gift if we just fully give ourselves to God. There is no higher calling in life then to be a servant of the Lord Most High. Jesus gave many examples of what true service to God is. He washed the feet of his disciples, when it should have been them washing his feet. In the Gospel of Mark, Jesus is the “one who comes to serve”. Jesus does the Will of God the Father. How much more the world would come to love him, if we show that love to each other?
Because we are made in the “Image and Likeness of God” Genesis 1:26-27 The life of every single human being on earth is to be respected. There should be no homelessness in the world. If we truly followed the Commandments of God, we should be helping to feed our fellow man and give him and his family the extra goods that we have. Just as we want to give good gifts to our children, we must think the same way towards another human being. No children should ever feel unwanted, no elderly person would be left alone or abandoned on the earth. St. Augustine says that we can’t find our own happiness. The joy can only be giving from God. It is a gift that only he can give. He gives that gift freely and daily. Most of us don’t answer the call or just ignore him. But he is always waiting for us. He is patient even until your final hour of your life when you are ready to leave this life to the next, pray for the grace to call out to God and ask for his help. He will not reject you, it is you who reject him. Let us close with this Prayer.
God, we thank you for sending your Son Jesus of Nazareth into the world. We thank you that his Mother Mary said yes, and the Word became Flesh. Allow us to put away all foolishness and give praise and worship to you. Only You can fill this huge void that I have upon my Soul. This void that aches, this void that hurts, let me give thanks Oh Mighty and Immortal God! You give the fruits of the earth to eat and the talents to share with our fellow man and try to bring peace upon the earth. Forgive us our sins and bring us to everlasting life. Amen!
God Bless you,
