The Blessed Virgin Mary: Exemplar of Obedience of Faith

From the Merriam-Webster definition of Obedience (Noun) 1. An act or instance of obeying.   2. The quality of state of being obedient.

Have you ever been told by your parents that you need to come home straight from school and do your homework? Have you been told by your spouse that you need to take the kids to school, because you’re going to be at a conference in the afternoon?  It seems that life is all about someone telling you what to do. From your parents to your bosses and even your friends or siblings.  Does this mean that your “freedom” is being suppressed? Maybe you’re asking yourself, well why do I have to listen? I’m an adult, independent, etc. I can do what I want! Yes, your right. You can choose to do what you want to do. Just remember…Adam and Eve decided to do their own thing and look at the mess we are dealing with now because of their disobedience.

God gives us rules for a reason. He knows what is good for us and he understands our needs better then we understand them ourselves. Look at Abraham in the book of Genesis. He was called by God to leave his country and go into a new land. How would your personal response to God be to a request like that? Would you obey the Lord and go into an area which you’ve never been too? Would you reason within yourself on the unknown dangers and stress of going into an unknown area? To go even further, Genesis 22 9:15 “When they came to the place of which God had told him, Abraham built an altar there, and laid the wood in order, and bound Isaac his son, and laid him on the altar, upon the wood. Then Abraham put forth his hand and took the knife to slay his son. But the angel of the Lord called to him from heaven, and said, “Abraham, Abraham! And he said, “Here I am”. He said, “do not lay your hand on the lad or do anything to him; for now, I know that you fear God, seeing you have not withheld your son, your only-begotten son, from me”.  Could you have the strength to do this to your own child? This of course, is a precursor in the future when God the Father offers his son Jesus, as a living sacrifice for the forgiveness of sins and reunification with God almighty for things to come. Abraham is a living example of putting complete trust in a God who he didn’t know yet, and because of his obedience, God blessed his Son Isaac and from him, the descendants from this bloodline will form a great nation!

The Blessed Virgin Mary is the greatest example of true obedience to the mission of the Holy Trinity. In Luke 1: 26-36 we read that the angel Gabriel came to our Blessed Mother with a greeting from Heaven itself. He revealed to her the plan of Almighty God and how she was chosen to bring the Son of the Living God into the world! She didn’t doubt like Zechariah did. She didn’t tell the Angel of the Lord that it’s impossible for such a thing to happen to me. She didn’t tell herself that “maybe I’m just hearing things, and this is not real.” NO! My brothers and she said the greatest thing, 2nd only to her Son Jesus when he died on the cross and said, “It is Finished!” John 19:30 Her reply to the will of Almighty God was “Behold, I am the handmaid of the Lord; let it be done to me according to your word” Luke 1:38. I believe that hell itself went into shock when she said her “Yes” to God, because the Promise from God in Genesis 3:16 was now coming to pass. The Son of the Living God was to take flesh and break the bondages of sin and death and destroy the power of the Devil on earth. The King of Kings is here and Holy is his name!

From CCC 494 “Thus, giving her consent to God’s word, Mary became the Mother of Jesus. She did so in order to serve the mystery of redemption with him and dependent on him, by God’s graces” It is hard, my fellow servants of the Lord to do his will. We are tempted daily, hourly by the world, the flesh and the devil. But each time we fight back and surrender ourselves to God, we gain the graces we need to do the will of our heavenly Father. We are washed in the Blood of the Lamb and are made pure in the light of righteousness! We must daily strive to take up our cross and follow him. Our Blessed Mother was at the foot of the cross. She saw her own son, tortured, whipped and humiliated. She uttered no curses or said anything evil. She knew that this was the moment in where the devil was to lose all his power and reign on the earth. She knew her son Jesus is being obedient to his Father, just as she did with God those thirty- three years before. Her Son, who was dying on the cross, even gave her over to John and he gave John to her. She became the Mother of the whole world and she remained steadfast and obedient. Praise be to God, for it is proper to praise him! Even after her ascension into heaven and being crowned Queen of heaven and earth, she has come back in apparitions telling everyone to obey her son.  She is teaching us how to be an example of true surrender to God. From St. Augustine, St. Padre Pio to St. Pope John Paul the Great, our heavenly Mother was involved in some way, shape or form to guide them into holiness and thus the world into holiness.

Let us end with this prayer. Heavenly Father, we thank you for the sacrifice of your Son Jesus who died on the cross to save humanity. We ask through the intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary, to help us to say “yes” to God. Help us to fully trust in the works of the Lord and lead us to do his will. May you shield us against the attack of the enemy and help us in our journey to everlasting life, Amen!

Be Blessed Always,

Aaron J
